Vintage Chinese Coromandel lacquer screen. A beautiful four panel screen, double sided, with brass feet. Most likely mid century. Coromandel screens (sometimes known as ‘export’ screens) were so named as they were initially exported by the East India Company to Europe from China via Coromandel. In this traditional technique the panels are first black lacquered then the design is carved away and painted. In very good condition, this is an exquisite piece.  One side depicts a village scene of pagodas and figures. The other has birds and lush foliage. Coco Chanel was well known to be an avid collector of Coromandel screens.
