Peacock blue, petrol, teal, turquoise: luxurious and dramatic colours that create beautifully cocooned spaces. Combined with white gives an ultra crisp contrast or layered up for fabulous oppulence. Whatever your home’s architecture and regardless of the style of your decor, this is a sensational tonal palette.

I’ve realised that I’m continually drawn to interiors where the walls are painted in a strong shade of green/blue! More than any other, this tonal palette seems to be on my radar (and has certainly filled up my Pinterest boards!). It’s such a great background for furniture of all styles. It can accommodate the full range from sleek and contemporary to full blown antique and everything in between. In our recent blog post on how to be confidently eclectic, we talked about how colour can be used to tie different styles together. Could this be that colour for you?

From a lighter sea green to a rich teal or bordering just this side of navy, see how clever design lovers and interior decorators have used this magic shade. We’ve put together a gallery of beautiful rooms which display contemporary as well as second hand furniture finds to ignite your creativity.

A Break with Tradition

Red, white and blue – for a more creative take on this traditional combination, take the blue to a greener tone. It’s very fresh and nautical without being too predictable. Next to peacock blue, this vibrant Warren Platner by Knoll red upholstered chair looks striking.

Bedroom Bliss

Deep teal walls in a bedroom are cocooning. This bedroom has been taken from a bland space to an inner sanctum, largely by painting the walls a beautiful rich teal and adding a few finishing touches. Notice the rug in a darker blue which adds extra depth and breaks up the large expanse of grey carpet – a great solution, especially for a rental property where it isn’t possible to alter the fixtures. It’s interesting that the bedhead, cushions and curtains haven’t changed yet the whole room comes off as so much more inspired after painting the walls!

If you’re concerned about painting entire walls such a deep hue, we love how Paris’s Hotel Henriette have created petrol blue accents as a theme throughout the hotel but in entirely different ways. See more Hotel Henriette here.

Mid Century Modern

The warm wood tones of mid century modern furniture look wonderful set against peacock blue walls. Teak takes on a golden glow and furniture pieces upholstered in mustard yellow, orange and brown spring to life. If you love second hand furniture with mid century appeal, take a look at the rooms below to find inspiration for bringing out the best in it.

Colour Coordinator

Peacock blue is surprisingly versatile. It is impressive alongside shades of pink from blush to crimson, as a contrast to reds, yellows, orange and greens, as a strikingly fresh background to bold patterns, or layered tone on tone with other shades of blue and green. Whatever your style, this is a colour that creates a mood.

Make a Statement

Teal is the perfect mix of sophisticated yet playful. As a feature wall it adds a vibrant touch to smart contemporary interiors and in more traditional settings it makes a let’s-not-take-ourselves-too seriously statement.

A Colour for Contemplation

Deep peacock blue can also create a calm and contemplative space. The feature wall in the living room below lifts the neutral tones of the furniture without being overbearing. In the fully enveloped study the lack of additional decoration allows the colour to quietly absorb the space.
